The Implant Surgical Procedure
First it needs to be evaluated whether sufficient bone exists in the jaw to hold the implant. If bone loss has occurred, then additional procedures may need to be performed - like bone grafting. This helps regenerate enough bone to safely place an implant.
Single Implant
Once it has been ensured that adequate bone is present at the site, the implant surgery involves 2 steps. First the implant is surgically placed in the jawbone. Then it is allowed to heal for a period of 3 - 6 months following surgery. This allows the bone to gradually bond with the implant. During the healing period, temporary abutments may be placed on the implant. A cosmetic temporary crown or bridge ( depending on the particular case ), can be placed using the abutments as support. This helps to fill the missing space and to eat a soft diet ( as recommended ) during this time.
The second step involves placing of the artificial teeth. The implant is uncovered and small posts are attached that protrude through the gums. This provides the structure that will anchor the custom made crown/bridge/denture that will be made to match the existing teeth. When the artificial teeth are placed the posts will not be seen. The entire procedure takes around 6 - 8 months. The daily routine of the patient is minimally disrupted.
